I met Akill in SC. He was working for a moving company. He liked to talk about living in the projects and his life. He was a very interesting person with a lot to say. This type of interaction is very helpful in getting to know someone. I try to translate those feelings as best as I can thru the drawing. Hopefully viewers can relate to the work. He couldn’t believe anyone would want to do a drawing based on his experiences. I had a very heartfelt conversation with him. This type of interaction can really inform the work. I consider these drawings and the people I meet as a part of my family. They have taught me so much.
